Thats funny! The " ... Thats funny! The "shutter actuations" describe what happens when you take a? photo. When you take a photo the mirror inside the camera flips up allowing light to get to the sensor. thats what the shutter actuation is. when the mirror flips up. during video the mirror is already flipped up the shutter is no longer actuating if that makes sense? So if theoretically a 550d has a lifespan of 100,000 shutter actuations it has an infinite amount of video recordings.

I actually checked out the? coolpiix in a store and found (tho its got a fantastic zoom) it had trouble focusing at maximum zoom, and didnt focus at all. (tho normal would be fine i guess)
Anyway, if your into photography great entry level slrs are; Nikon d3100, Canon 550d, Canon 1100d.
(im looking into buying a camera too and have decided on the Canon 550d)

@TheOriginalWhim um ... @TheOriginalWhim um no? idea but heres some advice i found out. If your seriously considering getting into photography dont buy the coolpix (compact dslr). The coolpix would be great if you just want a camera to capture great moments or to take shots with but later on if you want to exploire photograpgy more you wont be able to with this camera (since it doesnt have all the slr features and you cant change and buy better lenses) -i'll continue in another message
